Indian Style Spicy Crab Soup

All of us in our house like crabs. That does not mean it is a regular thing though. We drive to the waterfront in DC once in a year or couple of years and bring home a dozen or so. After that you forget about it for a couple of years. The Chesapeake blue crab is the popular variety in our neck of the woods.

Anyway we usually buy steamed crabs hit with a ton of Chesapeake bay seasoning. This time I got a bit more adventurous and wanted to try cooking some fresh crabs. Bought about a dozen home and managed to keep them alive over night, learned to clean cleaned them and successfully cooked them. It was not as hard as I thought it would be but not something I want to try again any time soon.

For the not squeamish readers I will post the step by step to cleaning a crab soon. While the body and bigger claws can be used in the curry the smaller claws with not as much meat does not have to be thrown away. They can be used to make some delicious soup.

Chop the onions, tomatoes and garlic. Blend the onions and garlic first. Set aside and then blend the tomatoes.
Wash and clean the crab claws with turmeric powder. In a pressure cooker heat oil and season with cumin seeds and curry leaves.
Add the blended onions and garlic, saute for 3-4 minutes. Add in the blended tomatoes.
Coarsely powder pepper an cumin seeds. Add the powdered pepper along with coriander leaves to the tomato mixture.
Add in the cleaned crab claws along with 4 cups of water.
Pressure cook for 6-8 whistles. Separate the crab claws.
Strain the liquid add more seasonings (salt and pepper) if required and serve.

This recipe is from my mom and this is how she makes crab soup. Very simple ingredients and the end result is delicious.
